Injury prevention should be on all our minds as we get into the heart of Summer. Being alert to ones surroundings is the first step to injury prevention and is key to having a great time no matter where you go. Please keep in mind that  these steps listed are a foundation to your injury prevention plan:

  • Take a CPR and First Aid course from your local American Heart or Red Cross training center.
  • Be alert to your surrounding for any potential danger.
  • Never be outside during a storm. Lightening can strike up to 3 miles or more from the storm front.
  • Always know where electrical lines are located before performing any work outside.
  • Drowning prevention is key to all. Having a pool party? Always have an alcohol free adult monitoring the activities going on.
  • Use caution and never dive into an unfamiliar pool. This rule applies to lakes, ponds, and rivers as well.
  • Keep knives and firearms secure from children. A locked safe is strongly recommended.
  • Conduct home fire drills and advise all of a meeting point that is safe outside the home.

Have a working smoke and carbon monoxide detector. Change the batteries every January 1st.

Always wear your seatbelt and wear it properly.

Have children in a proper car or booster seat that is properly secured in the vehicle.

Always have a disaster plan enforce.

Always have children in full view and/or by the hand while shopping or in any public place.

Teach small children that if they become lost find a Police Officer or EMS Personnel. Teach them their address and phone number when age appropriate.

These are but a few suggestions and ask that you be careful and have a fun Summer!
